Office of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia for Slovenes Abroad was established pursuant to the constitutional obligation laying down special concern for the indigenous Slovene minorities in the neighbouring countries, including Slovenian emigrants and guest workers abroad.  
The ''Office'' is a central state administration authority governing relations between the Republic of Slovenia and the autochthonous Slovene national community living in the neighbouring countries, as well as between the Republic of Slovenia and Slovenes living around the world.

Pursuant to Ordinance on the Organization and the Field of Work of the Government Office of the Republic of Slovenia for Slovenes Abroad (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia No. 60/2006) the said Office performs the tasks related to:

• creation and implementation of the national policy concerning Slovenes living in the neighbouring countries and around the world;
• autochthonous Slovene national communities living in the neighbouring countries;
• Slovenian guest workers and emigrants around the world;
• cooperation in the fields of culture, education, economy, politics, and other of autochthonous Slovene national community members living in the neighbouring countries and of Slovenes around the world with the Republic of Slovenia as a home country;
• care by the Republic of Slovenia as a home country to provide appropriate legal and law protection to the Slovene national communities existing outside its borders;
• providing financial support to Slovenian organisations and activities of Slovenes living outside the Republic of Slovenia borders;
• providing financial support to the Republic of Slovenia civil society organisations and individuals active in the field of fostering ties with Slovenes abroad, as well as performing supervision over the public funds expenditure by these organisations;
• providing information, counselling and assistance to Slovenian individuals and organisations outside the Republic of Slovenia borders;
• care for repatriation of Slovenes;
• acquiring status of a Slovene without Slovenian citizenship;
• other tasks performed within the Republic of Slovenia in connection with specific legal status matters relating to autochthonous Slovene community members living in the neighbouring countries, and to Slovenian guest workers and/or emigrants;
